How to Get Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night

Here is my how to on this category:

Keep having babies until you are lucky enough to have one that likes to sleep.

The End

This was my crazy response to seeing yet another article or blog post giving advise on how to get your baby to sleep through the night.  There are many tips and tricks.  But after having 3 of my own, a lot of it comes down to your baby.

My first two would scream until the threw up if I let them "cry it out".  They slept with me, and that's how we got our sleep.

This third guy, is so sleepy he is dozing off while playing, I pick him up and put him in his crib and he melts into the mattress so relieved to be there and falls asleep instantly.  I didn't train him, he came that way.

I can say, for a time, I felt like I was teaching him bad habits and went back to enforcing falling asleep on his own.  This has helped, but we still have horrible nights, like last night.

My advice for all you Mamas is to do what works for you.  Be safe and take precautions whatever the sleeping environment may be.  But ultimately, use your instinct.

And the best advice I can give you, is to find another Mom to talk to, if you can find another Mom with a baby similar to yours, that's even better.  Talk about it, come up with ideas, and talk about your lack of sleep to each other.  It will make you feel better, I promise.

  1. Yay! I am happy to hear this little guy is a fairly good sleeper! My daughter never slept as a baby or toddler. We were up multiple times a night with her every night for years. And at Five years old she is still not the best sleeper. I never came across a mom who had a baby similar to mine. I think all of my mom friends had babies who loved to sleep, and were sleeping through the night at eight weeks. I think this is one of the reasons I really connected with Amber Garrison, when I came across her blog. We both had babies the same age that hated sleep!

  2. I almost wrote about poor Amber when I wrote this post. She is seriously unlucky when it comes to babies. I kind of thought the sleep through the night 8 week old babies were just a myth. I thought the parents were just stretching the truth. Adam is not that great of a sleeper, but by far better than my other 2. My two older boys are 5 and 3 and still wake up at night. My 3 year old, Peter, wants someone in bed with him through the night. So for the most part my husband sleeps with Peter and I take care of the baby. Recently my 5 year old has been climbing in with Dad and Peter as well. So, there is nothing normal about our sleeping habits around here. I imagine in 10 years we might have the typical scenario of the kids nicely hopping off to bed while we get to sleep as a married couple in the same bed in the same room. Until then, honestly, I am just enjoying this time with my children, as they are, young and wanting to cuddle Mom and Dad.

  3. Or you can be a really sound sleeper and not hear the crying. Both my kiddos are pretty good sleepers, but when they were smaller and my mom would stay the night, sometimes she would come knock on the door and be like, "Um, the baby is crying." I literally was the same distance from them (across the hall from the babies, like 5 feet away from the door to their room), I just have a great ability to sleep. So if I ever have a newborn it will have to sleep in the room with me, because while 6 month olds don't NEED to get up in the middle of the night to eat, newborns do.
